NOMINATED CHARITIES AND WELFARE SERVICES
Meeting hardship in Greece
It was in the spring of 2012 that the Revd Canon Christopher Jage-Bowler, Anglican Chaplain in Berlin, enquired as to whether his congregation might send a donation to St Paul’s, Athens, to help provide relief for those suffering hardship in Greece. Some twenty months later €85.607,00 has been channeled to St Paul’s. Generous donations came from chaplaincies from within the Diocese, charities that the Diocese was able to draw upon, and from private donors.
Furthermore, the Chaplaincy itself has made a contribution through donating a percentage of monies acquired through fund-raising events. The money has been dispersed in two ways according to the wishes of the donors. The first focused upon programmes to relieve hardship on the streets of Athens or provide assistance to ‘care residencies’ whose financial resources are over-stretched because of the crisis.

From a letter of the Director-General, Mr. Constantine Dimtsas, of ‘Apostoli’ the central administrative centre for the welfare work of the Orthodox Church of Greece to the Anglican Chaplaincy in Athens
“Your financial support constitutes an essential act of Christian philanthropy and a shining example of social responsibility. Moreover, it constitutes an essential acknowledgment and confirmation of our work, in which we are honored to have you as our supporters in remedying efficiently that various social problems that we are currently facing.”
